He has the hindquarters, legs, and horns of a goat, in the same manner as a faun or satyr. He is recognized as the god of fields, groves, and wooded glens; because of this, Pan is connected to fertility and the season of spring. Pan's ancient Roman equivalent was Faunus, and they were both horned god deities. For this reason he is popular among many Neopagans and occult groups. Pan is famous for his sexual powers, and is often depicted with an erect phallus. Large Agate Cameo Ring
Large agate cameo ring, featuring Alexander the Great. The two tone agate cameo is ca 1760, probably Italian. The high carat pink gold ring is ca 1800.
During the 18th. century Italy became more accessible to cultural travellers, who came to marvel at Italy's ancient heritage. Florence, Siena and Pisa amongst others provided the riches of medieval and renaissance art, while Rome and Pompeii opened the curtain on ancient Rome. This phenomenal, abundant cultural heritage inspired the cultured traveller to take something back to England or wherever they came from and this inspiration spawned an industry called "Grand Tour".  The truly wealthy could afford genuine ancient artefacts, but the "Grand Tour" industry were the providers of most of the art and artefacts, marble carvings, painted terra cotta, mosaics, and micro mosaics, silver in the ancient style, carved cameos of Nero, Julius Caesar, Caracalla, etc.  All ancient mythology, Greek and Roman were used in all art forms and decoration.
This cameo is part of this Grand Tour history.

Alexander the Great Cameo ring
17 nth cent agate cameo, depicting Alexander the Great, in modern 18 ct. pink gold setting   / Alexander the Great was the single greatest conqueror of all time, never losing a battle between his ascension to the Macedonian throne at age 20 to his premature death from malaria, bird flue, overmedication, poisoning, alcoholism, or a combination of two or more of these causes at about the age of 33. He spread Greek culture from Egypt to India, changing the world and leaving a legacy that included not only his massive coinage. Yet his attempt to unite East and West proved ultimately a failure. The current conflict between the Islam dominated East and Judeo-Christain dominated West, which has existed for more than a thousand years, is only the latest example of this disunity./
